About Antigua & Barbuda

The local tourism line is that Antigua has "a beach for every day of the year," and the count is more or less accurate — the coastline twists into a dizzying number of small coves, each with its own claim. In practical terms, Dickenson Bay, Half Moon Bay, and Darkwood Beach get most of the votes, but the real magic is that you can always find a stretch with nobody on it. What separates Antigua from its neighbours is Nelson's Dockyard at English Harbour, the only working Georgian-era naval dockyard left in the world, now a UNESCO site and the heart of the Caribbean sailing scene. Shirley Heights, just above it, hosts a Sunday-evening barbecue and steel-pan session at sunset that is one of the best evenings out in the Caribbean. Barbuda, 30 miles north, has Pink Sand Beach and virtually no development.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Antigua safe for tourists?
Yes, Antigua is generally safe for tourists. The resort areas around St. John's, Jolly Harbour, and English Harbour see very few incidents. Standard precautions apply — don't leave valuables on beaches, use registered taxis, and avoid isolated areas after dark. Barbuda is even quieter and has almost no crime.
What's the difference between Antigua and Barbuda?
Antigua is the main, developed island with the airport, most resorts, restaurants, and the dockyards at English Harbour. Barbuda is 30 miles north, much smaller, far less developed, and home to Pink Sand Beach and the frigate bird colony. Antigua is for conventional Caribbean holidays; Barbuda is a day trip or overnight adventure for travellers wanting genuine isolation.
How do you get from Antigua to Barbuda?
Two options: a 90-minute Barbuda Express ferry from St. John's (around US$55 one-way, 2–3 departures daily in season) or a 15-minute charter flight with SVG Air or local operators (around US$200 one-way). Day trips are feasible but tight — many visitors prefer an overnight to fully experience Pink Sand Beach and the frigate bird sanctuary.
What's the best beach in Antigua?
With 365 beaches to choose from, the honest answer is "the one you can find empty." Among the named favourites: Half Moon Bay (wild, horseshoe-shaped, on the east coast), Darkwood Beach (west, with a good beach bar), Dickenson Bay (north, most developed, longest stretch), and Pigeon Point near English Harbour (calm, smaller, close to restaurants and the dockyard).
Is Antigua good for families?
Yes. Many Antiguan resorts cater to families with kids' clubs, shallow-water beaches (Dickenson Bay, Jolly Beach, Galleon Beach), and safe infrastructure. The sailing scene offers accessible boat trips for all ages, and excursions like Stingray City and Hell's Gate Island work for older children. Antigua is less party-heavy than Jamaica or the Dominican Republic, which suits family holidays.
When is the best time to visit Antigua?
December to April is peak season — the driest, calmest weather, ideal for sailing. Antigua Sailing Week in late April is the biggest event of the year. May and June offer lower prices and still-good weather. Hurricane season from August to October brings elevated storm risk and should generally be avoided unless you're committed to off-season pricing.
