About Bermuda

A note of geography first: Bermuda is not in the Caribbean. It sits 650 miles east of North Carolina, in the North Atlantic — about the same latitude as Savannah, Georgia. The water is noticeably cooler, the winters genuinely chilly, and the flora more subtropical than tropical. It's grouped with the Caribbean for travel purposes because of cultural affinity (British Overseas Territory, similar pace, similar rum-based cocktails), but a February trip to Bermuda is not a February trip to Barbados. What Bermuda does have is pink-sand beaches: crushed coral gives the sand a genuine pink tint, especially wet. Horseshoe Bay in the south is the famous one. The Royal Naval Dockyard at the western tip is an old British fortification turned tourist quarter. Inland, the Crystal Caves are the most impressive show caves in the region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bermuda in the Caribbean?
No — Bermuda is in the North Atlantic, about 650 miles east of North Carolina and well north of the Caribbean Sea. Its latitude is roughly the same as Savannah, Georgia. It's often grouped with the Caribbean for travel purposes because of cultural affinity (British Overseas Territory, similar pace, rum-based cocktails), but the climate is subtropical rather than tropical.
When is the best time to go to Bermuda?
May through October is Bermuda's high season, when the Atlantic is warm enough to swim comfortably. Water temperatures peak at 84°F (29°C) in August. November through April is off-season — mild (60–70°F air temperatures) but too cool for most people to swim. Many Bermuda hotels and restaurants reduce service or close entirely in winter.
Do you need a passport for Bermuda?
Yes, all visitors — including US citizens — need a valid passport. US, UK, EU, Canadian, and most Commonwealth citizens don't need a visa for tourist stays up to 90 days. You'll need proof of onward travel and accommodation. All arrivals complete the Bermuda Travel Authorisation online before departure.
Is Horseshoe Bay really pink?
Subtly, yes. Bermuda's beaches get their pink tint from tiny red foraminifera shells mixed into the coral sand. The pink is most visible when the sand is wet, or in early morning and late afternoon light — less obvious in bright midday sun. Horseshoe Bay is the most famous, but the smaller coves nearby (Warwick Long Bay, Jobson's Cove, Chaplin Bay) have the same pink sand with fewer crowds.
Is Bermuda expensive?
Yes, very. Bermuda has one of the highest costs of living in the world — most food and goods are imported, and it's a significant offshore financial centre. Expect US$400–800 per night for mid-range hotels in season, US$40–70 for restaurant mains, and high taxi fares (there's no Uber; meter taxis are the only option besides scooter rentals). Budget accordingly.
How far is Bermuda from the US east coast?
Flight times: New York to Bermuda is about 2 hours; Boston is 2 hours; Washington DC 2 hours; Atlanta 2.5 hours; Miami 2.5 hours. This proximity is a big part of Bermuda's appeal — it's closer to most of the US east coast than most Caribbean destinations, making it feasible for long-weekend trips.
