About Turks & Caicos

Turks and Caicos (pronounced "KAY-kohs") is an archipelago of eight main islands and dozens of cays, geographically north of the main Caribbean chain and technically in the Atlantic. For most travellers it means one place: Providenciales, or "Provo", and specifically Grace Bay Beach — a 12-mile stretch of sand so consistently rated the best beach in the Caribbean (and often the world) that even locals stop protesting. What Grace Bay is not is undiscovered. It's resort-lined, well-developed, and priced accordingly. Turks and Caicos is the most expensive Caribbean destination per night by most measures. What you get for the money is near-perfect water clarity and a reef system. The out islands — North Caicos, Middle Caicos, Salt Cay, Grand Turk — are much quieter and much cheaper.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Turks and Caicos in the Caribbean?
Geographically, Turks and Caicos is in the Atlantic Ocean — slightly north of the main Caribbean Sea, southeast of the Bahamas. Culturally and for travel purposes, it's usually included as Caribbean: similar climate, British Overseas Territory status, and similar tourism profile. The distinction matters mostly for pedantic discussions of geography and for some insurance and travel definitions.
Do you need a passport for Turks and Caicos?
Yes, all visitors — including US citizens — need a valid passport. US, UK, EU, Canadian, and Commonwealth citizens don't need a visa for tourist stays up to 90 days. You'll need proof of onward travel and accommodation. Pre-arrival registration through the TCI Assured Travel portal is also required.
Why is Turks and Caicos so expensive?
Almost everything is imported — food, fuel, building materials — and local wages, taxes, and land values are high. Grace Bay specifically benefits from being one of the most-ranked beaches in the world, so pricing reflects the premium brand. A mid-range hotel room on Providenciales typically starts at US$500+ per night in season, and US$2,000+ hotels are common.
Is Grace Bay really the best beach in the world?
It's consistently ranked in the top handful globally — TripAdvisor, Condé Nast, and similar lists have named it number one in multiple years. Twelve miles of fine white sand, gentle turquoise water, and a reef 400m offshore that blocks swells. Is it objectively "the best"? Impossible to say, but it's credibly in the conversation and rarely disappoints in person.
What's the best time to visit Turks and Caicos?
December through April is peak season — the driest, calmest weather and best beach conditions. May and early June are shoulder season with good weather and lower prices. July and August are hot and more humid but still quite dry. September through November is hurricane season, with elevated risk — budget-seekers come then, trip-insurance buyers too.
Is Turks and Caicos safe for tourists?
Yes — Providenciales and the main resort areas have very low tourist-targeted crime, and the country overall is well-managed. Petty theft in tourist zones is the main concern. Standard precautions apply: don't leave valuables unattended and use hotel-arranged transport when possible.
